Five signs your IT strategy needs updating

Peter AkerstromJanuary 3, 20256 min

Technology evolves fast. New frameworks, platforms, and ways of working appear all the time. But company strategies don't always keep up. An IT strategy that was relevant three years ago can be an obstacle today. Here are five signs it's time to review yours.

1. Your systems don't talk to each other

If you spend hours moving data between systems, exporting to Excel, and manually syncing information — then you have an integration problem. Modern architectures are built on APIs and data flows that make information flow automatically. If your strategy doesn't address this, you become more inefficient with every system you add.

2. The development team is constantly overloaded

The backlog grows faster than you can deliver. Every new feature takes longer than expected. Technical debt accumulates. This is often a sign that the architecture doesn't scale, that the tools are outdated, or that processes need review. A good strategy balances new features with maintenance and modernization.

3. Security incidents are increasing

Cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated. If you're still relying on pre-pandemic era strategies and tools, there's a high risk you have gaps. Modern security is about zero trust, continuous monitoring, and rapid response — not just firewalls and antivirus.

4. Cloud costs are spiraling

Many companies that moved to the cloud quickly during the pandemic are now discovering that costs are hard to control. Without a clear strategy for cost optimization, right-sizing, and FinOps practices, the cloud bill can become an unexpected burden.

5. You're struggling to recruit technical talent

The best developers want to work with modern technology. If your stack consists of older technologies without a plan for modernization, it becomes harder to attract and retain talent. An updated strategy that shows the way forward is a recruitment argument.

Updating your IT strategy doesn't have to be a big project. Start by mapping the current state, identifying the biggest pain points, and prioritizing. Sometimes a few targeted efforts are enough to make a big difference.
